Transforming Your Virtual Assistant Business with the Right Mindset
Mindset.
We hear about it all the time—positive mindset, entrepreneurial mindset, growth mindset. But what does it actually mean to shift your mindset in a way that allows you to build a sustainable, freedom-based Virtual Assistant business? More importantly, how do you integrate mindset work into your daily routine so that it becomes the foundation of your success?
Let’s dive into what mindset truly is, why it matters so much to your Virtual Assistant business, and how you can start making intentional changes today to create the life you’ve always dreamed of.
What Is Mindset and Why Does It Matter?
Your mindset is simply the way you think about things—the lens through which you view the world, your business, and yourself. It's the set of beliefs and attitudes that shape your approach to life and business. When we talk about mindset in the context of building a Virtual Assistant business, we're talking about shifting from a mindset that might be holding you back to one that empowers you to grow and succeed.
Shifting your mindset isn't something you do once and then forget about. It's a daily practice that involves recognizing the thoughts that don’t serve you, understanding where they come from, and intentionally choosing new, empowering thoughts that align with the life and business you want to create.
The Power of an Optimistic Mindset
Let me share a quick story to illustrate how mindset can influence your life and business. A little while ago, I took a spontaneous trip to the Dominican Republic with a friend. She kept telling me how positive I was, how laid-back and optimistic I seemed, even in the face of little travel hiccups like late Ubers. She admired how I didn’t let small setbacks ruin my mood.
But here's the thing—I'm not positive all the time. What I am is optimistic. I’ve trained myself to see challenges as opportunities and to trust that I can solve any problem that comes my way. This mindset shift didn’t happen overnight; it’s the result of consistent, intentional work.
How to Reprogram Your Mindset for Success
If there are traits or attitudes you wish you had—like being more optimistic or resilient—you can reprogram your mindset to adopt those qualities. It’s like training a muscle; the more you practice, the stronger it gets.
Start by identifying the thoughts and beliefs that are holding you back. Maybe you think, "I’m not good enough to run my own business," or "I’ll never find clients who pay well." Recognize these as limiting beliefs, not truths. Then, ask yourself where these thoughts came from.
Was it something someone said to you? A past failure that made you doubt yourself? Understanding the origin of these beliefs is the first step to changing them.
Designing a Life You Love
One of the biggest mindset shifts you can make is realizing that you have the power to design your life. And I don’t mean in some abstract, “wouldn’t it be nice” way. I mean literally sitting down and deciding what you want your life to look like—and then making it happen.
Think about what you loved doing as a child. Maybe it was swimming, drawing, or playing outside. How often do you do those things now? Probably not much, if at all. But here’s the thing—those activities brought you joy for a reason, and incorporating them back into your life can bring you fulfillment now.
For example, if you loved swimming as a kid, why not join a local pool or swim club? If you enjoyed drawing, set aside time each week to doodle or take an art class. These small, intentional actions can have a huge impact on your overall happiness and, by extension, your business success.
The Connection Between Mindset and Your VA Business
You might be wondering, "What does all this have to do with my Virtual Assistant business?" The connection is simple: the mindset you bring to your business will directly influence its success.
When I started my Virtual Assistant business, I didn’t realize how much my mindset would affect my outcomes. For the first two years, my business wasn’t working for me because I hadn’t done the mindset work to figure out what I truly wanted. I was following someone else’s dream, not my own.
This is why mindset work is so crucial. It allows you to define your own path, create a business that aligns with your values, and ultimately build a life that brings you joy and fulfillment. Without this foundation, you risk building a business that feels just as restrictive and unfulfilling as the corporate job you left behind.
Steps to Start Shifting Your Mindset Today
So, how do you start shifting your mindset to support your VA business? Here’s a simple exercise that I use daily.
Business Owner Calling Exercise
1. Set an alarm. Set an alarm on your phone labeled "Business Owner Calling" to go off every day, preferably a few minutes after your wake-up alarm. This will be a daily reminder to check in with your mindset.
2. Visualize your future self. When the alarm goes off, close your eyes and visualize yourself as the successful business owner you’re working to become. What are you wearing? How do you feel? What does your environment look like? How are you spending your day?
3. Feel the emotions. Focus on the emotions that come up during this visualization. Do you feel confident, happy, fulfilled? Let yourself fully experience these emotions as if you were already living this life.
4. Reflect. After your visualization, take a moment to reflect on what you saw and felt. How can you start bringing elements of that future self into your present life? What small actions can you take today to move closer to that vision?
If you do this exercise every day, you’ll start to build a clearer picture of the life you want and the path to get there. Over time, your mindset will shift to align more closely with your goals, and you’ll find it easier to take the actions needed to build your VA business.
The Ongoing Journey of Mindset Work
Mindset work is not a one-time thing. It’s a journey that continues as long as you’re growing and evolving. As you move forward in your VA business, you’ll face new challenges that require you to stretch your mindset even further. And that’s a good thing—because with every challenge you overcome, you become a stronger, more resilient business owner.
Remember, the mindset you start with is just the beginning. As you grow your business, your mindset will continue to evolve, helping you achieve goals you once thought were impossible.
Building a Business and Life of Your Own Design
Your Virtual Assistant business is more than just a way to make money—it’s a vehicle for creating the life you’ve always wanted. But to get there, you need to do the mindset work that will support your growth and success.
Start by recognizing the thoughts and beliefs that are holding you back. Then, take intentional steps to shift your mindset, design your life, and visualize your future self. This work isn’t easy, but it’s essential if you want to build a business that not only supports you financially but also brings you joy and fulfillment.
